Here we have compiled offers for older people, but also for institutions or caregivers.
The mobile library - home delivery service for older people
Older people who are no longer mobile can have books and other media delivered to their homes.
Residents with limited mobility throughout the city of Mainz are eligible to participate.
The delivery and home visit service is free of charge. The only cost is the standard annual fee of 12 euros for library membership. You can order any books and media available for loan from the Public Library’s collection. There are approximately 180,000 items to choose from: novels, illustrated books, nonfiction, magazines, feature films, and music, as well as eye-friendly options such as large-print books and audiobooks.
In addition to specific title requests, we’re also happy to put together a selection of books based on your personal interests.

Mobile Library Mainz e.V. at Stadtgefühle Mainz 2026:
Mobile Bücherei Mainz e.V. will be at Stadtgefühle Mainz on the banks of the Rhine, at Raimunditor / Schloss, on Saturday, August 15, 2026. From 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the association will provide information at the “Market of Opportunities” about its services for seniors in Mainz—ranging from a media delivery service to read-aloud sessions and discussion groups.
At 4:30 p.m., the Mobile Library Mainz invites you to the workshop “Cultural Participation of Older Adults—Strengthening Connections, Reducing Loneliness” in Workshop Tent 1. Together, participants will develop ideas on how to strengthen cultural and social participation. Registration is not required.

Storytime Sessions for Seniors, Spring 2026:
“Ei Gude wie? – Stories of the Joy of Human Connection”
In spring 2026, the Mainz Mobile Library will once again bring its storytime sessions to facilities throughout the Mainz metropolitan area. The storytime session is a free reading and discussion program for seniors that combines literature with social interaction. The series of events will take place from April 23 to June 12, 2026. The specific dates for the individual reading sessions will be announced shortly.
The program focuses on stories, poems, and discussion prompts that highlight the joy of human connection. The program explores encounters, solidarity, small gestures, friendship, and family—and the moments that brighten up everyday life. The “Vorlese-Stunde” is deliberately designed to be interactive: listening, reminiscing, and storytelling go hand in hand and are supported by appropriate discussion prompts.
The reading sessions take place at over 25 locations throughout Mainz, including senior centers, senior community centers, neighborhood community centers, and neighborhood cafés. Through the storytime sessions, we aim to foster participation and combat loneliness among older adults—as a contribution to a socially inclusive Mainz that bridges generations.

Internet for seniors
Two-part introductory course at the public library - Anna Seghers
Number of participants: Maximum eight

Content: Fitness on the Internet is not a question of age! At the end of the two-part course "Internet for Seniors," each participant will have a basic knowledge of research and communication on the Internet. The program for the first part focuses on navigating the World Wide Web: searching and finding, data security and handling sensitive data, operating and using the Internet browser, and using search engines. In part 2, participants become interactive surfers, set up their own email addresses, and send their first emails. Other topics include online shopping, the function and benefits of AI tools, and much more. Prerequisites for participation: Basic knowledge of using a keyboard and mouse.

Easy on the eyes: books in large print
Large-print books are attractive not only for visually impaired people, but also for anyone who wants to read in a way that is easy on the eyes. That is why the Anna Seghers Public Library has compiled an extensive list of her novels in large print. The range of fiction extends from modern classics and sophisticated contemporary prose to light entertainment and crime novels.
The large print list is available free of charge at the main branch of the public library – Anna Seghers, Bonifaziustürme – and its district libraries in Gonsenheim, Hechtsheim, Mombach, Weisenau, and Lerchenberg. It can be ordered by phone or email (06131 12-2362, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.; oeffentliche.buechereistadt.mainzde). It is also available for download here.
But there are also other eye-friendly alternatives to large-print books: a large selection of audiobooks and the particularly convenient option of accessing the virtual inventory of (opens in a new tab)the Rhineland-Palatinate eLibrary with more than 40,000 electronic media. This is because when reading with an e-reader, the font size can be adjusted as desired. Anyone who would like to try out this reading experience can borrow e-readers from the library; the library team offers training courses for beginners on request.
Offer for working with dementia patients
The Anna Seghers Public Library has a special offer aimed specifically at institutions and caregivers involved in resource-oriented therapy or care for people with dementia: bags available for loan containing a selection of read-aloud books, whose compilation of texts and songs is designed for working with dementia patients.
Elderly care facilities and relatives of dementia patients can order these bags by calling 06131 12-2476 or emailing oeffentliche.buechereistadt.mainzde and pick them up at the Public Library headquarters. Registration is free for non-profit institutions; all others pay an annual fee of €12.

Storytime Fall 2026: Stories for the Ears—Music for the Heart: Feel-Good Stories About Music and Dance
The Mobile Bücherei Mainz e.V. invites you to a special series of story readings centered on music, dance, and personal memories, running from October 19 through November 27, 2026. The selected feel-good stories tell of songs and melodies, of dance and the joy of life, and of special encounters and memories that remain with us to this day.
We look forward to sharing many wonderful stories, familiar melodies, and warm encounters with you!
Through these storytelling sessions, we promote joy, social interaction, and community engagement among older adults. In doing so, we aim to make a valuable contribution to a dignified sense of community as well as to a social, intergenerational, and sustainable city of Mainz.
The event series is supported by local partners who are working together to create a socially inclusive and livable Mainz.
Participation is free of charge. Please note that registration with the respective organizer is required.
